Welcome to the Inaugural Production of Arkansas Classical Theatre!

Director’s Notes about the Show:

The Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare’s earliest plays as well as his shortest. Typical of the comedies, it begins under tragic circumstances: Egeon, a merchant from Syracusa, has landed in Ephesus in search of his son Antipholus, and due to ongoing animosity between the two cities Egeon is sentenced to death, unless he can find someone to pay a hefty sum on his behalf. When Egeon shares his story, we learn Antipholus is an identical twin who was separated from his brother as a young child, and that seven years ago he left his father in search of that brother. Antipholus also kept his brother’s name to keep his memory alive. On this day, both Antipholus twins end up in Ephesus unbeknownst to each other, and comic mayhem occurs.

The play is an adaptation of a popular ancient Roman comedy. Shakespeare’s changes include deepening relationships and expanding the women’s roles, and most importantly, adding a second set of identical twins, both named Dromio, who are servants to the respective Antipholus twins, doubling the comic chaos.

It’s startling to see themes and circumstances of the play resonating today, such as the fear and jailing of immigrants, tariffs placed upon foreign merchants, the division of brothers, and the loss of sense of self. “Who am I?” is a recurring question in the play.

Shakespeare’s company performed in an open-air theatre, before the advent of modern scenic design. The text, rather than scenery, tells us where and when the scenes of the play take place. That feature, along with knowing Shakespeare was a producer as well as a playwright, led to some of our production choices, including a small troupe of actors playing all the roles, and presenting the play with limited scenic changes. I hope you find our design choices have captured the magical dreamscape of the play, and that you enjoy watching these incredible actors transform from one character to another!
